Sales Tax and Expense Compliance Accountant

About the Role:

Full-time hands-on Sales Tax and Expense Compliance Accountant to assist with monthly tax filing compliance, as well as to be able to access and respond to State notices in a timely manner. This role will oversee 8 different brands that file independently from each other.

Our growing company is looking for a Sales Tax and Expense Compliance Accountant. If you are looking for an exciting place to work, please take a look at the list of qualifications below.

  • Location: 100% Remote. (Required to work from any location within the USA.)
  • Reports to: Controller @ Renovation Brands.
  • Base Salary Range: $50,000 - $65,000 (experience & interview performance will determine actual number within the range).

Responsibilities:

  • Sales and use tax compliance using Avalara software.
  • Respond timely to State tax notices for delinquent returns/underpayments.
  • Coordinate, assist and respond to State tax notices for audits/survey while ensuring minimize assessments.
  • Determine when Company achieves Nexus in a new state to ensure future compliance. Then be able to register timely within the state and proceed with Avalara reporting and collections.
  • Coordinate and maintain policy for sale exemption certificates for both customers and vendors (resale certificates).
  • Monthly reconciliation of sales tax payable to payments made on monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Liaison with Avalara counterpart to respond to filing and back filing issues, when necessary.
  • Research and interpret upcoming tax laws that may affect future sales tax filings.
  • Applying for and renewing business licenses where applicable.
  • Assist with quarterly and annual GST Canada filings.

Other Responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing of Expensify and VISA receipts for documentation compliance
  • Performing other projects / duties and accounting related special projects as assigned by Manager.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • MUST be very familiar with and have working knowledge of Avalara sales tax software and reporting.
  • MUST have working knowledge of NetSuite ERP General Ledger software.
  • Nice to have: associates or bachelor’s degree in Taxation, Accounting, Business, or Finance.
  • 3+ Years of experience in similar role.
  • Advanced knowledge of sales tax requirements for a large e-commerce corporation in a multistate environment.
  • Familiar with Microsoft office products.
  • Familiar with GST filings.
  • Have solid communication, prioritization, and organizational skills and can manage competing deadlines and due dates.
  • Open and straightforward, with strong work ethic.
  • Proactive in recommending solutions when discussing problems.
